Sports bloggin'

Ok, so I don't watch sports most of the year, until the various sports get to their playoffs, so I'm hardly an authority or someone to look to for sports knowledge, but I know what I know.

And what I know is...officiating in the NBA is the worst in any sport I've ever watched. It's not that it's lopsided, though maybe it's that too, but good freaking googily mooglily is it bad. Wildly uneven, inconsistent, seemingly filled with make-up calls. Unbelievable.

My remedy? Hard to fix a system so broken, but here's a couple...

  1. Players don't get to talk to the refs. No little happy chats while the opposing team shoots free throws.
  2. Anything more than 2 steps is traveling. One of the eastern Europeans playing for the Lakers took FOUR freaking steps on an almost uncontested break away. You could see it on a replay where only his head and torso was visible. It was the most shameful display of traveling I've ever seen.
  3. Some sort of post game analysis by the league, with punishments/bonuses to those that are the most consistent, enforcing of the rules.

Other sports bloggin' - lacrosse is like hockey, only better. Two sports with nearly identical rules, the principle difference being lacrosse features almost constant displays of skill, while hockey features wild frenzy punctuated by rare moments of skill. I happened to see some 'professional' lacrosse on TV recently, and while I'm not liekly to become an avid follower of the sport, I would much rather watch it than hockey.

The refs were horrible last night -
I'm a KG kind of guy, but I am also intrigued by the Lakers - I found it frustrating - I could not beleive all the fouls being called on one end compared to the other - YUCK!!!!

La Crosse eh...

no talking to the refs makes sense, especially the betting ones

I haven't seen the Lakers play all season until Thursday (nor Boston for that matter) but what I've seen is not intriguing in the least.

Between Kobe's petulance and any team having Luke Walton, they're losing points me me pretty fast.

As much as I'm not a partisan, Boston comes across well, with stars that play solidly and with little drama. Ray Allen may be the most unassuming 20+ point scorer I've ever seen. And it's not like I have any love for players from CT.

slow down there about your boy Ray - he is overrated and is just now getting over an amzing shooting slump

he is the Jake Reed to Carter and Moss - in terms of his big threeness

Mighty Tom said...

it should have been intriguing, Boston LA, Kobe, Pierce, and KG, but sadly so far not

Where did I ascribe to him big threeness? I said he was the most unassuming 20+ point scorer I've ever seen. Based on two games watched, I'll stick by that opinion. The fact that he also plays good defense, even better.

Paul Pierce is clearly the 'heart' of the team and even KG is a notch down from Pierce - not necessarily in his measurable output, just in how the team feeds off of him.

Allen scores when the opportunity comes and generally acts like a role player.

Hopefully LA doesn't play so moody at home and things get more interesting.

And Jeff van Gundy sucks.

Once in 1995 you predicted Ray Allen as being a part of a big three.

Yes Pierce is the offensive power - a nice marriage with KG - they need each other

I did not know about your love for Ray. It is sweet - sorry about comparing him to Jake Reed.

I hope things are better in LA. See you there?

Van Gundy DOES SUCK! Worse than Doug Collins even.

Is he at the Macy's parade or a basketball game?!?

Pat said...

I have no love for Ray, only some appreciation.

He's no Calbert Cheney.

Mighty Tom said...

Few can be grouped with the great Calbert. You know he would have taken state!

Calbert the llama - I think did.

He's a terrible apologist for the things wrong with the NBA.

The whole announcing crew is bad. I can't count the number of times that they've blathered on about something, missing various controversial calls.

Mighty Tom said...

and Van Gundy share more personal stuff than any other announcer and is the one that really shouldn't

he acts as if he is beloved and people want to know - as if he was wearing red mittens and ear muffs with rosy cheeks watching a giant Scooby Doo float by supported by dancing Scooby snacks in high heels and thongs

I just hope that the Celtic win. I dislike the Lakers. Kobe is a punk.

Who the hell is science gooroo? It's guru anyway.

I like the Celtics too. Go Boston!
