Forgotten laughs
After my 4 hour commute last night, and shoveling a spot to park my car, I had only enough brain power to watch the SNL Christmas compilation on NBC. The above was one I'd forgotten, from what I think of as the most consistently funny era of SNL. (the capture is poor quality, but the comedy is top notch)
From that same era they had the 'Lost' ending to It's a Wonderful Life, where Dana Carvey as Jimmy Stewart learns Mr. Potter stole the money, and rallies the town to confront John Lovitz as Mr. Potter.
From earlier was A Gumby Christmas with Joe Piscopo doing his Frank Sinatra impression, nailing the cartoonish crap that is J-I-N-G-L-E Bells. (if you haven't heard that actual Sinatra song, count yourself lucky - it will render you powerless to turn it off).
There was also a Wil Ferrel bit with him as the junior high music teacher (a very funny series of sketches), the Adam Sandler Hanukkah Song, and even a funny song by the usually unnecessary Horatio Sands.
Good stuff.

In total agreement about this as the best SNL era - a oh, how well I remember all these old skits. I lived for that show back in high school. About the only part of past-me that survived to my adulthood was my sense of humour.
Another great Christmas moment in SNL: was Jerry Seinfeild showing up at a Christmas dinner as some propher or another.
VERY funny stuff!!
I've pretty much watched SNL with some attentiveness in almost its entire run, except for the first few years when I was five to ten years old. I missed a few years in the '90s when I was overseas and the show apparently sucked anyway.
The new stuff isn't so bad, I must say.
