One of the recent MacArthur Genius award winners studies undersea brine pools. These pools are so much saltier than the rest of the sea water that they remain distinct from it, and seem to only support bacterial life.

The one creature that can transcend the difference is the gulf hagfish.

Wonder how the gulf hagfish would do in the Great Salt Lake or the Dead Sea.
