Big honkin' TV

We pulled the trigger on our TV purchase, a 47" LCD. The size is staggering, but man, seeing the beginning of FOTR (I haven't had time to sit through the whole thing...yet) HOLY CRAP.

In our larger remodeling project we had set aside a chunk of wall for this thing, and I've done everything feasible to make all of the wires go away. Right now it's just hooked up to our super-basic cable ($11/month which apparently includes some basic digital channels, which I didn't know) and a DVD player, but at some point will also be hooked up to a computer, giving us the ability to watch streaming Netflix, YouTube yada yada yada. No wires are visible.

I did hook up a computer in a less than permanent fashion to it and streamed a portion of the third Pirates of the Caribbean from Netflix and while the image didn't fill the whole screen it was easily the equivalent of a 37" screen or so, and looked great.

The clarity of actual high definition channels I find a bit disconcerting at this point, but seeing some of the various nature shows on HD PBS last night was sweet. God help my free time.

This beast replaces a 12 year old 27" tube tv, which will continue its existence in our household, but will likely get little use. When we had one tv (every minute of our life together up until Saturday), we rarely found a reason to wish we had two. Nothing on tv was so important that we NEEDED to each be watching something simultaneously.

Nice purchase.

I must say, I've often regretted the purchase of my 26" LCD, which still requires me to sit on the floor in front of the couch in order to read subtitles. 26" LCD definitely does not feel "big" the way a 26" tube TV does.

Possible slight movement on a previously considered immovable front: Sharon, upon watching a trailer for the BBC documentary Our Planet Earth: "It sounds weird to say this, but it sure would be nice to see that on a larger TV."

* sigh *

Laptop and bigger LCD TV. Two things I will not have in the foreseeable future and would totally have if I was single.
