The Turtle Saga

The people who read this know about the snapping turtle that lays eggs in our yard every year. This year, I thought she had checked the place out, but it didn't appear that she had actually laid any eggs. Well, apparently she did, and yesterday afternoon they emerged from their buried home of 90 days and made their way to the lake.

If you're a 2 inch long snapping turtle, the path from nest to lake is a mind-boggling one, comprised of death defying drop after death defying drop, and one presumes, some threat of predators. Lucky for this batch, a pair of benevolent humans felt sorry for them and helped them on their way.

Man, I just think about snapping turtles swimming around in that lake of yours and it makes me want to buy Aquasox before my next visit.

Never have I seen them while swimming. Only while boating. They are shy creatures.

That said, mom has a 16 inch shell and could probably bite off a toe.

Hard to shake the sins of the father. My dad was a sworn enemy of the species.

Hilarious.

I'm sure I'd have a different opinion if I'd been bitten, but as it is, I'm happy to have such fascinating creatures inhabiting my local environment.

very cool and good job helping them out! Instead of photographing them being eaten by a snake or crushed by a vehicle. Why not help them?

Neat pictures!

Interesting topic. There's definitely the school of thought out there that says, "Don't intervene!"

The way I see it, these turtles have to cross roads, their shells have to withstand chemicals, and they have the make their way over man-made rip-rap to get to the water. Sorry, friends, it's a little late to make that call. Like it or not, we've already intervened.
