GoodReads

An online community organized around books. For those of you with Netflix the rating system will seem very familiar, and like Netflix you can invite friends to add you to their list. You can also see friends of friends.

A coworker clued me into this...not sure if it goes anywhere...

Check it out here.

I signed up but ugh...just what I need. Public accounting of yet another aspect of my life.

Understood...

It does have some very cool features, including a book swapping/selling feature and geographic proximity for finding people close to you.

I've been using LibraryThing (see widget on the left column of my blog), but I don't update it often. It's a lot to get into, like Dan said. But, hey, it may turn out to be the greatest thing on the web.

That's some optimism...or thinkly veiled sarcasm...

Goodreads has a widget you can add to your blog but I'm too html illiterate to figure out where to insert the code - so far.

I have a suggestion...

Okay, I've started to enter some data. I think I'll maintain Librarything for now, as well.

OK - I'm hooked, you bastard.

I may use this to keep track of books "to read," and ditch (one of) my spreadsheet(s).

That's what I'm using it for.

I can't imagine starting an online book group.

Goodreads is a decent app and should suffice. It has comments sections for the books; anyone wishing to start a discussion could do it there, it appears.

I love Good Reads!!!

The one thing is how you are expected to choose between different editions of the same book. Sort of like when you discover that you gave a movie 5 stars in Netflix, and then realize that you gave 5 stars to some "extended version" WTF?

I'm glad.

The distinction between the hardcover and paperback version is annoying, assuming the content is the same. I understand the general notion behind editions, but there should be a better means of filtering.
