Long Time Gone

Like Stephen, I was also on vacation. Also, like Stephen, I was in Iowa. I was there for a great Mix Moot. Many years had passed since the last. Much fun was had by all.

In other news:

Books

I finished World According to Garp by John Irving in the airport on the way back. As a John Irving fan, there was much to like, and this is the book that got him noticed, but on the scale of things this book is more tragic than comic and as such suffers from too much misery. A movie starring Robin Williams was made in the 80's. His first 'serious' role. I still recommend Hotel New Hampshire and A Prayer for Owen Meany.

I started reading A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore, which was recommended by my sister and has been almost universally entertaining, though I haven't finished it. It's about an insecure 'beta male' whose wife dies shortly after childbirth and who thus unexpectedly finds himself raising his infant daughter and also as one of many 'Death Merchants'. As such he essentially stands in as Death (the guy with the sickle, though much more interesting in this case) and his daughter seems to be more than she appears.

Devil in the White City and Oryx and Crake (both recommendations of family members) on deck.

Politics

Still no horse in the Democratic race as it remains more than 6 months to Iowa. I watched minimal TV in Iowa so I avoided any hubbub that exists. I did walk by a Tom Tancredo office on Welch Avenue in Ames which struck me as almost the worst place in the state for such a thing. Anywhere in Iowa City would have been worse. As it is he's spending big dollars (relatively) for some prominent real estate in a college town. I suspect even in 'conservative' Ames Tancredo's polling is within the margin of error, relative to zero.

More on politics in a separate post.

Harry Potter (spoiler for those that haven't read six)

My brothers and sisters are in UNIVERSAL agreement that Dumbledore will return in seven. Maybe this is a consequence of nurturing but there wasn't a hint of doubt during a discussion about it. We all rise or fall together.

If Dumbledore returns and says "I come to you now, at the turning of the tide," I'm going to go apeshit.

Should we really be talking about the "return of Dumbledore" when Stephen is just finishing book 4?

I put the spoiler warning in there.

Plus, he said he'd be caught up by the end of his week off.

I kinda heard about that bit already. It was hard to avoid, but in the great span of things, it's fine with me. I should be done with book 6 by Saturday.

I inadvertantly read the spoiler on this shirt a while back.

I would recommend more Moore. Bloodsucking Fiends, The Stupidest Angel, Practical Demon Keeping are all great. Krista says Fluke is the best, but I haven't gotten to that one yet.

Miles: hilarious t-shirt in concept, less great in execution.

Aaron: I finished A Dirty Job and liked it very much - I'll check out some of his other stuff.

You finished "a dirty job," eh?

So that's what we're calling it now.
