I recently ordered a new digital camera from Amazon, them having the lowest price (although not by much) and me having a credit there.
Order placed - September 4th (item IN STOCK)
Estimated delivery - September 27th
Jesus!
I will let this order be completed, but that is the last of my dealings with Amazon. I had a similar experience last Christmas - they had a book that I wanted to order as a gift but were estimating 10 days for delivery, while Barnes and Noble could do it in 3.
I just sent them this e-mail (boy they make finding the CONTACT US link difficult).
To whom it may concern,
Amazon has the worst processing system of any online service I have used in recent years. An order I placed on September 4th is not scheduled for delivery until September 27th. When I placed the order it was clearly labelled as IN STOCK, which by any reasonable assumption means it is readily available. The order was eligible for Super Saver Free Shipping, which, according to your own website, adds 3-5 days to the delivery. Assuming the worst case scenario of 5 additional days, that would still place the order delivery at September 22, 18 days after the order was placed. Again assuming a worst case scenario of 7 days for actual transit, that puts the date the order was actually put in the mail at September 11, a full week after the order was placed. And these are worst case scenarios. I could easily assume that you spent two weeks processing an order for an item that was IN STOCK. That's ridiculous.
After the conclusion of this order I plan to never order from Amazon again. This is not the first time I've dealt with your incomprehensible order slowness, but it will be the last.
And this is their reply - pretty prompt too.
Thank you for writing to us at Amazon.com.
We are very sorry for the delay in completing your order. I have passed your message along to the appropriate department for review, as I know they will want to hear about your experience.
Upon investigating your order, I discovered a problem that was preventing your order from shipping. This problem has been corrected, and your order will now be shipping soon.
To help compensate you for this unexpected change, I have upgraded the method of shipment for this order to Two Day Shipping. There is of course no additional charge for this.
The new estimated delivery date is: September 22, 2006.
As soon as your order has shipped, we will send you e-mail confirming the date, contents, and method of shipment.
So magically they 'fixed' an error that was delaying my order and now it will be here in 2 DAYS!?
That's crap.

What will you do if they give you the procedure and it actually takes that long for some reason? Is there any justification that they could give you that would change your mind?
I doubt it.
There are lots of other options out there.
Could it be that you ordered a book that feel into that one out of every hundred that they don't happen to stock in a DC?
It seems I've had a couple of slow shipping issues from Amazon, but those were always in the Christmas season.
B&N may have a similar thing as this, but I'm a huge fan of Amazon marketplace. You can find a used CD or book in near-mint condition usually for sub $5, sometimes for sub $2. An amazing source of Christmas gift material, especially when one has decided to give only book as Christmas gifts in the future.
Why do you need a new digital camera?
The book, as with the camera, was clearly labelled IN STOCK. I wouldn't have proceeded any farther through the order if it had not.
Our camera has been acting extraordinarily flaky over the last year. It works fine for a stretch but then won't turn on for a day or two. It's also had focussing problems over the same period. Not an acceptable set of circumstances.
We'll keep the old one around for certain uses, but hopefully the new one will be an improvement in all respects.
Wow-what do you have to say about that?
I think they're full of shit.
I related the story to people around here and got similar stories from almost everyone.
I'm glad to be getting the camera five days earlier, but sheesh.
Give them another chance brother.
If you are too upset take five to calm down. Just find a room that is free of people or animals and let it out. Get a punching bag. Just don't go out into the street and punch the first guy you see. :)
This is like chance #3.
They can get bent.
hmm, that is a wonder, especially when you consider the size and strength of the women picking and shipping the orders. Must be high on strength, but low on logistics.
Dirty work conditions. Evil overlords. Skimpy outfits. Bulging muscles. And nearly a foot of sweaty cleavage.
And considering they're navigating their dugout canoes out of the rainforest and up the eastern coast of North America, I think 23 days turnaround time is pretty good.
Dan: Your comment was right on! Very funny.
Imagine me blowing pretend smoke off the top of my index finger, which is arranged like the barrel of a pistol.
