Iron and Wine - Such Great Heights

Now in an M&M's commercial.

And here is a place you can read people discussing it.

What a neat little discussion thread (except for the person that makes the accusation of someone being "arrogant" near the bottom). I, sadly, heard the commercial as well.

While the use of that term is an unfortunate one, the idea behind it is a worthwhile one.

It's an old story, intimately linked to the 'sell out' problem. There are lots of people who lose respect for a musical artist once that artist becomes more widely known. They prefer to have that artist in their own cabinet of curiosities,nd quickly disavow their connection to them. Or they endlessly trumpet that they knew them before anyone.

What was really interesting about that thread is the explanation of how the system works, and who really owns the rights to the music. It's hardly fair tosay someone sold out if they don't really have much say hown their music is used.

That last part is true. I also agree, as one person in the thread suggests, that "selling out" could be looked at as relative.

Is the band one where members are scratching to get by, working at coffee & porn shops, or is it Sting lending a track from his latest release to a Mercedes Benz commercial because he doesn't yet have an Ottoman for his dollar bill chair.

On a side note, I saw one of the more bald-faced examples of the marriage between product placement and "journalism" yesterday during a halftime show of an NFL game. Who was in studio to offer commentary on the game? None other than Subway's Jared, replete with a full array of sandwiches and drinks on a little table in front of him, that he offered a word about before he was done.

Potential Onion editorial: "Jared sold out, man!"

Not sure it's actually possible for Jared to sell out.

His entire existence is that of once fat corporate shill.

Did he call the games correctly?

I simply saw that he was there and commenting on something. Didn't catch any specifics.

I would guess not, though. Not sure if many people anywhere called yesterday's games correctly.
