Basketball

Interesting night of basketball last night.

Our group is constantly evolving, and in its current incarnation includes at least 3 people taller than me. Significantly taller, on the order of 3+ inches. A pretty unusual situation given my basketball history.

The result of that was that for one game last night I got to play what is arguably (for me anyway) my natural position, small forward. In that one game I was able to score form almost everywhere, inside, outside, wherever I could find open while moving without the ball. With less responsibility for brining the ball up, or sitting like a blob on defense under the basket, even my defense improved.

A good night.

I do miss basketball on a regular basis. Also something that might be hard to come by, if Zephyr becomes reality.

But my knees haven't been this happy in years.

I've been battling achilles tendonitis for a year or so. I've eliminated all the shoes that were making it worse but basketball still leaves me sore for a few days every week. It sucks.

But basketball is worth the pain, so far.

I'm still loving those FILA shoes I bought out of necessity in Boston. Best b-ball shoes I've had in years. Other than that, making sure toenails are properly trimmed is the key to pain-free basketball.

By the way-it's nice to check in on your blog & see a nice
"what's going on in my life" post like this, rather than the same angry, angry rant for four weeks.

I rarely think anything that's going on in my life is particularly interesting.

The achilles thing is bad. It's one of those injuries that never heals. If I were to strain them too far, it's possible to rupture the tendon and at that point I'd probably never walk again.

I had a pair of what I thought were decent 'hiking shoes' for stomping around in, but I discovered after a long drive in them that the back was freakishly stiff and dug into my achilles. That was more than a year ago. For the most part I only wear low slip-on shoes and have to wear running shoes to play basketball. Basketball shoes come up to far in the back and itrritate the achilles problem.

I think that over the summer I'll be able to fully rehabilitate them.

If you're concerned about debilitating foot injuries, I'd really go easy on the running shoes for basketball. I could never do it cause of the potential for the ever-threatening sprain, but have you considered low-cut basketball shoes that at least give you proper support for the kind of motion you do in b-ball?

I recently got a pair of low-cut hiking boots/shoes for everyday use. I'd been using old running shoes for my around the house/around town wear, and finally decided that I needed something that protected my toes a little better plus was more prepared for the occasional rugged activity in which I am prone to spontaneously engage.

On the other note, if you really think the things going on in your life are significantly less important than the things Cory & I write about, I don't know if I can convince you otherwise. But I believe I can speak on both our behalfs in saying we'd be interested in being in the loop even on the seemingly mundane. Those are the conversations of true friendship.

I've been meaning to check out lower cut court shoes, actual tennis shoes perhaps, just for the wider stance.

I'll keep the mundane in mind.

What did you have for breakfast? :)

The same thing he does every morning. A big ol' sausage.
