I think the US should try this

From an AP story about elections in Iraq.

One provision that may help overcome logistical challenges and encourage turnout in troubled provinces is to allow people in those parts of the country to vote anywhere they like, rather than only at a specified polling place, officials suggested.

How the fuck does that work?

"Did you vote?"
"Yes."
"Where is your ballot?"
"Over there."
"Where?"
"Does it matter?"
"I guess not, as long as you voted."
"Allah be praised."

There's the obvious democratic flaw in that only the most densely populated areas would then be catered to by politicians.

What?

WHERE DOES THE BALLOT GO?

Oh, I see what you're saying.

I was taking it to mean that they could vote at any polling place, but it didn't have to be a specific one for anybody.

But YOU'RE taking it to mean that they can just vote on a ladder, under a tree, or in a Chuck E Cheese. That is funny, but I think they might have meant what I said above.

It thought it was funny what they were saying on the Al Franken Show about (and this is true) how they are not announcing the names of candidates for security purposes. There was a quote from a spokesperson for the interim government that said something about how elections where the candidates names are not known is "less than ideal."

They're not really voting for individual candidates. They voting to establish percentages of representation. This is interim government #3. This government is to write the constitution followed by the next round of elections, all this year.

Insane.

Who would have won the election if that kind of loonacy took place here? Imagine voting 10 times in ten different locations with 10 different identities. Blows your mind wide open.

Yeah, instead we just have electronic voting machines with no paper trail, election officials that are also campaign chairs, and no consistancy in voting process through all the polling places in our country.
